Episode 9. Blocked

Cheon Yeo-ri rushes to the elevator where Ma Gang-uk appears. He gives her the rings for the ceremony like nothing happened and that he got stuck in the elevator for a few minutes. She fears losing him to a ghost like Cha Gi-u, who once broke an engagement, but Gang-uk promises to always stay by her side.

Kang Min-hwan, jealous as he watches them kiss, proposed marriage to Yeo-ri, but she rejected him, saying she only considered him as a brother and friend. Meanwhile, he notices his mother, Ms. Song, meeting Grandma Pang at Siena Hall’s entrance. Ms. Song refused to attend the engagement ceremony because she was not invited.

Min-hwan called his mother, pretending not seeing her. She denies being in Korea, leaving him puzzled about why she is hiding her presence. He asks Director Gong to contact her and Director Ok to prepare for a meeting.

The engagement party succeeds as Ma Gang-uk places the ring on Yeo-ri’s finger. Chairman Baek Gyeong-ja and Grandma Pang join the photo session and all the guests congratulate the couple.

Yeo-ri and Gang-uk discuss how he can hold her hand without seeing ghosts while walking under cherry blossoms for the first time as fiancés.

Meanwhile, Cheon Ha-ri tells her mother, Director Ok Gye-hi, and her brother that the engagement party boosted Siena Hall’s bookings, which threatens their plan to replace it with a gallery that she intends to manage. Director Ok receives a call from Director Gong who pledges support to her in their bid as majority shareholders to take over the corporation. She quickly schedules an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting to remove Yeo-ri as CEO of the Reina Group. Gong’s ₩50 billion loan that are equivalent to his Reina group shares is resolved by Min-hwan, strengthening their position against Yeo-ri.

Yeo-ri confides to Chairman Baek that exposing the slush fund scandal could silence her opponents and halt their bid to take over the company, though she admits the evidence she has is only circumstantial and it is too early to reveal it. She feels pressured as Min-hwan has joined the group opposing her. Yeo-ri seeks the crucial three percent share owned by Miss Han Se-in that was inherited from her husband’s family, to secure majority control for Yeo-ri’s favorable vote.

Yeo-ri risks traveling to Singapore for an investment conference just before the shareholders’ meeting to meet Miss Han. She discovers Han is more interested in the art exhibits enterprise than hotel operations. Gang-uk wants to accompany her but cannot leave; he sees Min-hwan at the airport and considers following.

Min-hwan successfully blocks Yeo-ri’s attempts to win shareholders and Miss Han. Han declines Yeo-ri’s partnership offer, preferring to sell her stocks at double the price to Min-hwan. Yeo-ri suspects Min-hwan manipulated Han’s attendance at the conference, but he stays ahead by meeting manager Danny Tan, preventing her from learning the truth.

Yeo-ri was talking to Min-hwan at the poolside when she suddenly recalls the yacht accident 12 years earlier when someone dives into the hotel pool. She remembers Ji-hwan giving her a protective necklace before falling into the sea as the yacht struck rocks underneath. She nearly drowned herself when she fell overboard too. She asks Min-hwan if Ji-hwan’s necklace was left behind, but he lies, claiming it was lost in the water—though he secretly possesses it.

Min-hwan remembers Ji-hwan discovering the matching rings in his bag that he intended to give Yeo-ri and Yeo-ri’s photo in his wallet. He was surprised to learn earlier that Ji-hwan bought a pair of rings to give to Yeo-ri too that day on the yacht and revealing his feelings. They were fighting over her just before the yacht hit the rocks and Ji-hwan fell overboard.
Yeo-ri asks Gang-uk’s help to locate Han Se-in. He enlists Heong-min to track her online, finding a building from her social media posts. He then leaves Heong-min in the office to retrieve artwork from the elders of ancient artist Do-won’s village.

Ms. Song reminisces about her son Ji-hwan and meets Grandma Pang in an old village, planning dinner with Prosecutor Ma to get to know him better. He was the recipient of Ji-hwan’s heart when they were young. Grandma Pang learns from Ms. Song that Yeo-ri and Ji-hwan were both born in the year of the black monkey, which a fortuneteller claims will bring Gang-uk misfortune. She confronts Prosecutor Pil-dong about Yeo-ri’s birthdate, only to discover it was his wife’s.

Yeo-ri goes to meet Mr. Tan at the Singapore aquarium, but Min-hwan intercepts him for a business meeting. Disappointed, Yeo-ri is surprised to find Gang-uk at the aquarium instead. He holds her hand while wearing gloves, shielding himself from the ghosts that haunt Yeo-ri’s life. Despite his fear, he chooses to stay close.
